When traveling away from home, whether staying in a luxurious five-star hotel or a humble roadside inn, our ultimate goal is to find a cozy and comfortable space to shelter from the elements. Therefore, unlike the lavishness and high-end features required for hotel lobbies, front desks, and banquet halls, hotel room lighting design focuses more on customers’ needs for warmth, comfort, and romance.

So, how should the lighting design of hotel rooms be done? Here, I broadly discuss the lighting design of hotel corridors, rooms, and bathrooms together for your reference.

Lighting design for corridors in 5-star hotels
In general, hotel corridors have guest rooms on both sides and usually no natural light, so 24-hour lighting is necessary. The lighting design for corridors should not only meet aesthetic requirements, but also consider factors such as energy efficiency. In my opinion, energy-saving lights with good color rendering are sufficient for hotel corridor lighting, and only lights illuminating the room doors need to be kept on during late hours. Additionally, to break the oppressive and dull feeling of the corridor, lighting fixtures can be used to illuminate the walls and create an interesting effect. Floor lamps installed at a height of 20-30 centimeters above the ground can also serve as guides when other lighting is turned off at night.

Lighting design for guest rooms in 5-star hotels

  • Guest rooms are the core of a 5-star hotel, and for travelers, the room is a temporary home that serves multiple functions, such as a bedroom, study, and living room. Therefore, the lighting design should consider these factors and use warm tones to create a cozy and comfortable atmosphere. In my opinion, wall lights should be avoided in guest rooms as they can be difficult to update or adjust, especially when their position is not accurately installed or they do not match the room’s interior design.
  • The bathroom is an essential part of the guest room, and tube lights installed flush with the ceiling should be used in the bathroom. Bathroom lighting fixtures should have waterproof and moisture-proof functions, and the lighting should be located outside the bathroom door. A centralized control panel should be designed for the bedside lighting in the guest room, and there should be a refrigerator cut-off switch and charging outlets near the entrance. Additionally, all non-general lighting power sources should have energy-saving controllers.
  • Furthermore, guest rooms require convenient lighting control that can be turned on or off easily and have adjustable brightness. The lighting control should be designed to be flexible and convenient, using different control methods.

Specific operational methods:

  1. The lights in the hallway are controlled by two switches, which are installed on the entrance side and the bedside table respectively.
  2. The switch for the bathroom light is installed on the outside wall of the bathroom door.
  3. The dimming switch for the bedside lamp and the switch for the foot-of-bed night light are installed on the bedside table.
  4. The switch for the dressing table lamp can be installed as a double switch on the bedside table.
  5. The floor lamp uses its own switch and is controlled by a double switch on the bedside table.
  6. The switch for the curtain box light can be installed on the wall near the curtain or as a double switch on the bedside table.

PS: Many five-star hotels also have energy-saving control switches that control all appliances except the refrigerator, achieving the purpose of turning off the lights when people leave and saving energy. A light source with a color temperature below 3500K should be used in the bedroom, while a light source with a color temperature above 3500K should be used in the bathroom to show cleanliness and freshness.

Warm colors should be used in the bedroom and high color temperatures in the bathroom to emphasize cleanliness.

Lighting Design for Hotel Bathrooms

The lighting in hotel bathrooms should be soft and even, with a combination of general lighting and mirror lighting to create a refreshing and clean environment while meeting local lighting requirements.

Basic lighting can be achieved with anti-fog tube lights or ceiling lights, and energy-saving tube lights combined with anti-fog ceiling lights can be used for local lighting, with a relatively high illumination requirement (300LUX).

A ceiling light can be installed above the toilet for reading, and anti-fog tube lights can be used for basic lighting above the bathtub. The washbasin can be illuminated with tube lights or spotlights. The illumination for the mirror should be above 280 LUX, and white incandescent bulbs or tri-color fluorescent lamps are recommended for the light source.

Primary lighting fixtures used:

  1. Hallway: Recessed light fixtures
  2. Bedside: Table lamp, wall lamp, track light, spotlight, and cylinder light
  3. Vanity table: Wall lamp and cylinder light
  4. Writing desk: Table lamp and wall lamp
  5. Seating area: Floor lamp
  6. Curtain box light: Fluorescent lamp
  7. Bathroom ceiling light: Ceiling-mounted light and recessed cylinder light
  8. Bathroom cylinder light: Fluorescent lamp or cylinder light

If the entrance, lobby, and front desk lighting design is the facade of a five-star hotel, then the lighting design of hotel rooms and corridors is the hotel’s interior. If you only make the lobby and front desk look luxurious but neglect the rationality of the lighting design in the guest rooms, it will inevitably appear to be all show and no substance.

Postscript: Lighting design is not just about selecting lights. It is a technical and artistic work. If you do not have the time and expertise to DIY lighting design, you might consider hiring a lighting designer!
